Why I stopped the “If you can dream it, we can build it” mentality

Why I stopped the “If you can dream it, we can build it” mentality

Everywhere you look you see designers, programmers, agencies and the like promoting the constant idea, “If you can dream it, we can build it”. I’m just as guilty. When a friend and I formed our first web design company in 2003, that was our slogan and we held firm to it. Over the years, I’ve worked with different companies on a vast number of projects and I’ve realized, it’s just not the right approach.

Some of you are already thinking “but it’s what I want” or “it’d be so cool”. I don’t ever dismiss the ideas people bring to me, but I do analyze them and weigh the factors that go beyond time and cost for myself and the client. Let me give you an example.

One of the first clients I quoted in 2003, so we’re talking a timeframe where broadband access wasn’t quite household level yet, wanted to have a site designed for his landscaping business. My partner and I went to town on mockups, pricing options and how to approach SEO for the client. After we presented our mockups the client had an idea. They wanted a 3d rotating cube on the page that would dynamically load different images on each side as it turned, and a user could mouse over it to control spin direction. Back in these days, we’d approach that idea with using Flash as a solution. My partner and I talked it over and started prototyping the cube because this was what the client wanted and yeah, we thought the idea was cool from a design/coding perspective. What we really didn’t think about was, where was the value of this to the site visitor. Something cool to look at and memorable? Sure! Unfortunately, it came with a downside of increasing the page load and distracted from the meat of the site. We had others check out the site and many, myself included, found themselves playing with the cube and not paying much attention to the rest of the content. We gave the client what they dreamed of, but it created a distraction from their purpose.

Now don’t get me wrong, I will always love taking on new challenges and breathing life into ideas for clients, but I had to realize, there’s a reason clients come to others instead of trying to do it themselves. It’s more than just time, it’s knowledge and experience. When you hire an agency or a contractor, you’re doing it because you want to utilize their experience. It’s our duty as the provider of services to give you access to that knowledge, and in my opinion that goes beyond just creating something. It’s my responsibility to explain why an idea a client presents might not be in their best interest, no matter how cool it is, just as much as it is to give them my ideas on additional aspects of their project.

More than 15 years since that client, as well as countless others, I’ve made my approach much simpler. I’m here to help you grow using my experience and knowledge to help guide you based on what I’ve seen works and what I’ve seen that doesn’t. That’s what you get with Silversky Enterprises, a company that will go the distance to do more than just give you want you want, we’ll help you figure out what you need.
