How Working With ADHD Gives Me A Secret Weapon
As a young kid, I was diagnosed with ADHD and tossed on medications to handle the problem. The meds worked but made me a zombie. My creative side died for years until I took myself off meds as a teenager and learned to just deal with my problem instead of relying on a drug to do it for me.
Adjusting to life off meds was a challenge. Learning how to handle distractions and finding my own ways to keep on task as well as how to pull myself back into the flow after getting distracted. Over the years I’ve learned some tricks and turned my problem into a power.
The first thing I had to learn was that not all distractions are created equally. If I utilized a background noise that overpowered other noises, I blocked out multiple auditory distractions and was able to keep myself focused and on task.
Next, I had to deal with visual distractions. That can be a hard one depending on the situation but positioning my desk not to be looking out the window or facing an open doorway helped. This allowed my focus to stay on my monitor and my desk, so it cut out a multitude of distractions.
Lastly, I learned how to turn on my little “superpower”. For those who aren’t aware, one of the aspects of ADD/ADHD for many is what we call hyper focus. This means when something does grab our attention and holds it, everything else fades away and we can spend hours upon hours on task just churning away.
With hyper focus, we can read a book and not put it down until it’s completed and not realize we’ve spent the last 14 hours reading non-stop. What I figured out how to do was turn on that hyper focus at will. When I code, when I design, when I work on marketing campaign, when I draw up strategies for clients, I flip the switch on my little power. This allows me to devote that time strictly to the task at hand for my client.
This little power comes in handy for late night coding sessions, emergency IT support or coming up with a detailed marketing strategy to present to a client.
